The name 'Moles' was faintly visible, carved into the paint on the front of the helmet. Research in the rosters of the 517th PIR showed that there was only one Moles in the unit: Marvin Moles, from I Company. Marvin was found still alive in the USA, and returned to southern France for the 60th anniversaries of the Liberation. He was able to revisit the former battlefields he had fought on, and meet up with some grateful Frenchmen who had lived through the Liberation.

This small badge was found by some Bedouins in the sands of the battlefield of El Alamein, in Egypt, where serious fighting took place in 1942. The inscription on it: "Fussball Klub Oberrot 1928" indicates that it is the badge of the soccer club of the village of Oberrot, in Germany. Since this village is very small, I considered it very probable that research may prove fruitful. An inquiry with the elders in Oberrot revealed that only one member of the Oberrot soccer club had participated in the fighting at El Alamein: Richard Metzger. He had been a radio operator in a tank of the 8th Company of Panzer Regiment 8. Unfortunately, Richard Metzger was killed in combat on July 17th 1942, in El Alamein, where the badge was found. Hans Niederberger, another inhabitant of Oberrot had helped to extract Richard Metzger's body from his destroyed tank. It is probably when his body was being manipulated, or when it was exhumed after the war, that the badge was lost. Richard Metzger's body, after having been buried in a temporary grave, now rests in the German Military Cemetery of El Alamein.

Richard Metzger. 8Kp Panzer Regiment 8. +17.7.1942 El Alamein

A Bedouin prepares tea on the El Alamein battlefield.

The inscription "Sterud 6786" was found written in the collar of a US army raincoat found in southern France. William Sterud's son was contacted and provided us with pictures of his father, who was a paratrooper and ended the war as a member of the famous 'Screaming Eagles' 101st Airborne Division.

William Sterud

Harold Miller's life jacket-Le gilet de sauvetage de Harold Miller

This American life jacket was found by a French teenager in Normandy in the 1970's.

In 2006 a mass grave containing the bodies of 14 German soldiers of Reserve Division 148 was found in the town of Villemeuve-Loubet, in southern France. In order to make his mess tin clearly recognisable, the soldier carved the following inscriptions into it: 'Jim Heaven Ross 1944'. Unfortunatly, the name 'Ross' is very common, 'Jim' and 'Heaven' are probably nicknames, and there is no serial number or partial serial number; all this combines to make identifying the original owner difficult. A search of the rosters of the First Special Service Force revealed that one soldier of the unit was named: 'J.E. Ross', from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Perhaps this J.E. Ross is the man who lost this mess tin?

US helmet with partial serial number C-0757
Casque Américain avec matricule partiel C-0757

This helmet was found abandoned in a forest by a French girl in the Somme region of France on September 3rd 1944. On the side of the helmet, the paint has been scraped off in a triangular shape, probably in order to accommodate the insignia of an armored unit, that has since disintegrated with time. The French girl indeed remembered that some men of 'Patton's Army' had camped in the forest the night before. Inside the helmet is the 'laundry number' C-0757, in other words the soldiers initial and the last for digits of his army service number. Because I am not familiar with the units that liberated the Somme region, I have no rosters of soldiers to compare this laundry number with, and have this been unable to find out who the original owner of this helmet was.

Gefreiter Monzhausen's helmet and gas mask

This German helmet and gas mask were kept by a family of farmers in Gaubert, near Digne, in the French Alps. Such wire camouflaged helmets were very popular amongst troops in southern France. The inside of the gas mask is marked with the original owner's name: 'Gefr Monzhausen', in other words Gefreiter (corporal) Monzhausen. I do not know what unit Gefreiter Monzhausen was in, and it is usualy very difficult to research German soldiers because their personal information is kept very private by the German military archives.
